How Much do you Know About the Production Process of Aluminum Carbon Bricks?
In 1983, Japan used the non-burning Al2O3-SiC-C refractory material that can meet the needs of modern torpedo-type hot metal ladle trucks and ladle, which triggered a world revolution. Aluminum-carbon bricks belong to the range of aluminum-carbon refractory materials. The so-called aluminum-carbon refractory material refers to the carbon made by bonding alumina raw materials and carbon raw materials, in most cases, other raw materials, such as silicon carbide, metal silicon, etc., with organic binders such as pitch or resin. Composite refractory material. Broadly speaking, the refractory with Al2O3+C as the main component is called aluminum-carbon refractory. According to the production process, aluminum-carbon refractories can be divided into two categories: unburned aluminum-carbon refractories and fired aluminum-carbon refractories. The performance characteristics are strong corrosion resistance, good thermal shock stability, high strength, and high thermal conductivity. So, how much do you know about the production process of aluminum carbon bricks?

The production process of two types of aluminum carbon bricks
Aluminum-carbon bricks include two types, one is aluminum-carbon bricks containing alumina and graphite, written as Al2O3-C bricks; the other is aluminum-carbon bricks containing alumina, silicon carbide and graphite, written as Al2O3-SiC-C bricks. The production processes of the two types of aluminum carbon bricks are different. Al2O3-C bricks are fired at high temperatures, namely Al2O3-C bricks are fired. Al2O3-SiC-C bricks are unfired bricks that have not been fired at high temperatures. The fired Al2O3-C brick has high strength, and the typical use is for pouring steel slides. Unburned Al2O3-SiC-C bricks can be added with a variety of special additives, especially with the special properties of alkali resistance, slag resistance, and oxidation resistance. Its typical use is the lining of torpedo-type iron wagons. In recent years, my country has used them for the lining of blast furnaces.
Blast furnace aluminum carbon brick is a good material for blast furnace lining replacement. Its performance is better than that of traditional blast furnace lining refractory bricks. It has a similar performance with silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide bricks, and the cost is reduced by 2/3. Therefore, since the advent of aluminum carbon bricks, they have been used in blast furnaces and have achieved good results.

How to choose raw materials?
Refractory aggregates and powders mainly use super-grade and first-grade bauxite clinker, and materials such as white corundum and brown corundum can also be used. Carbon materials mainly use flake graphite and medium temperature pitch. Silicon carbide uses special grade or first-grade products, and dense SiC can also be used. Phenolic resin is used as a binder, with solid content ≥75%, free phenol ≤6%, residual carbon ≥43%, water content ≤2%, and density about 1.1g/cm3. The general mix ratio is 40%-60% for coarse aggregate, 5%-20% for fine aggregate, 8%-15% for flake graphite, and SiC4%10%. Refractory powder 15%~25% and binder 4%~6%. In addition, superfine powder, anti-alkali agent, and expansion agent are added as needed.

Mixing, forming and heat treatment are similar to magnesia carbon bricks.
Aluminum-carbon bricks are significantly better than magnesia-carbon bricks due to their oxidation resistance and have excellent corrosion resistance against Na2O slag. Therefore, it has been widely used in hot metal pretreatment equipment. Fired aluminum-carbon refractories, referred to as fired aluminum-carbon bricks, belong to the ceramic bonded type, or ceramic-carbon composite bonded type. It is widely used as a sliding nozzle slide plate for continuous casting, long nozzle, immersion nozzle, upper and lower nozzle brick, integral stopper, etc. Fired aluminum-carbon bricks have become long-life ingot refractory materials due to their high strength, high corrosion resistance, and high thermal shock resistance.
In addition, modern refractories used in blast furnace tapholes are also amorphous refractories made of Al2O3 as the main raw material and adding SiC and C. Although there are many kinds of iron ditch materials, there are ramming materials, plastic materials, castable materials, vibrating materials, and so on. In addition to asphalt or resin bonding, there are chemical bonding, cement and clay bonding, and so on. But it also belongs to the category of aluminum-carbon refractories.
