Graphite electrode quality and performance

In the national standard (YB/T 4088/89/90-2000), graphite electrodes are divided into three types: ordinary power graphite electrodes (RP), high power graphite electrodes (HP), and ultra-high power graphite electrodes (UHP). Graphite electrodes are mainly made of petroleum coke and needle coke as raw materials, coal tar pitch as a binder, and are made through calcination, batching, kneading, pressing, roasting, graphitization, and machining. It is a conductor that releases electric energy in the form of an arc in an electric arc furnace to heat and melt the charge. According to its quality index, it can be divided into ordinary power, high power, and super high power.
(1) Regular power graphite electrodes. It is allowed to use graphite electrodes with a current density lower than 17 A/cm2, which are mainly used in ordinary power electric furnaces for steelmaking, silicon smelting, yellow phosphorus smelting, etc.
(2) Anti-oxidation coated graphite electrode. A graphite electrode coated with an anti-oxidation protective layer (graphite electrode anti-oxidant) on the surface. Form a protective layer that is both conductive and resistant to high-temperature oxidation, reducing electrode consumption during steelmaking (19%~50%). Extend the service life of the electrode (22%~60%) and reduce the power consumption of the electrode. The promotion and use of this technology can bring such economic benefits: ① The unit consumption of graphite electrodes is less, and the production cost is reduced to a certain extent. For example, in a steelmaking plant, if there is no production stoppage throughout the year, the LF refining furnace consumes 35 graphite electrodes per week, and the consumption of 165 furnaces for refining treatment is calculated. After adopting graphite electrode anti-oxidation technology, 373 electrodes (about 153 tons) can be saved every year. Calculated at RMB 16,900 per ton of ultra-high power electrodes per year, RMB 2.5857 million can be saved. ②The graphite electrode consumes less electric energy, which saves the consumption of electric energy per unit of steelmaking and saves the production cost. ③Because the replacement times of graphite electrodes are less, the labor load and risk factor of operators are reduced, and the production efficiency is improved. ④Graphite electrode is a high-consumption product, which has important social significance in the season of advocating energy conservation and emission reduction.
(3) High-power graphite electrodes. It is allowed to use graphite electrodes with a current density of 18~25A/cm2, which are mainly used in high-power electric arc furnaces for steelmaking.
(4) Ultra-high power graphite electrodes. Graphite electrodes with a current density greater than 25A/cm2 are allowed. Mainly used in ultra-high power electric arc furnaces for steelmaking.
