Among them, cordierite-mullite materials are suitable for occasions with low temperatures, low working stress, and high thermal shock resistance. The shelves, columns, pads, etc. of low-temperature fast-firing kilns are often made of cordierite-mullite materials.

The biggest weakness of cordierite-mullite materials is insufficient high-temperature resistance, and the main cause of damage to its shelves is bending creep. The main way to increase the life of the shelves is to reduce the Na2O and CaO content in the material, increase the firmness of the bond between cordierite particles and the width of the "connecting bridge" between particles by improving sintering, and try to reduce bending stress. The main cause of damage to the pad is thermal shock creep. The measures to improve thermal shock resistance are to appropriately increase the content of cordierite and control the difference in physical properties between aggregates and substrates to form a suitable weak bonding interface or microcracks.

Silicon carbide materials are suitable for occasions where the temperature is not very high and high working stress, high thermal conductivity and high thermal shock resistance are required. Silicon carbide materials are divided into oxide-bonded, reaction-sintered and recrystallized silicon carbide materials and nitride-bonded. Oxide-bonded silicon carbide is a low- to medium-grade kiln furniture. The porosity of reaction-sintered silicon carbide is almost zero and it has high strength, but the use temperature should not be higher than 1350°C, which is very suitable for low-temperature fast-firing kilns. Recrystallized silicon carbide has good dimensional stability and high-temperature bearing capacity, and is suitable for occasions with temperatures above 1350°C. The use effect of chloride-bonded silicon carbide varies greatly depending on purity, mineral composition and microstructure. For example, silicon carbide materials bonded by high-purity, granular and dense silicon nitride-silicon oxynitride phases can generate dense and highly viscous surface glaze layers and internal protective layers that prevent oxidation during use, and thus have a satisfactory service life.

Mullite-corundum series materials are suitable for occasions with high calcination temperatures, such as firing alumina ceramics and ferrite ceramics.

After long-term use, the fiber will crystallize, powderize, and generate substances that may cause cancer. To overcome these weaknesses, the fiber blocks can be folded to improve the scouring resistance, and special coatings can be applied to the fiber surface or covered with refractory sheets. The carcinogenicity of refractory fibers can also be solved. The solution is to prepare and use coarse fibers or soluble fibers larger than 6μm. The powdered products of coarse fibers are difficult to fly away and are less likely to be inhaled. The powdered products can slowly dissolve after being inhaled, and are much less harmful.
